Interview with On Point Magazine

Onpointmag.info: How did you did you hook up with SMD?

Trapstar: I sent Charlamagne a email with 3 songs in it, and he replied call him ASAP with his number. I called him and we agreed to have a meeting in Columbia that weekend. We met chopped it up and then went on like a 8 club run that night getting my single played. That was last summer and It’s been on ever since then.

Onpointmag.info: You just dropped The Work for Hire Mixtape with Dj Chuck T how did the concept for the mixtape come about?

Trapstar: Honestly Chuck came up with the concept. He explained it to me, and I said it was dope so we ran with it. Basically it just states I work for hire. Seems like the game has gotten stale and if you’re lacking ideas I can help you with that. Other aspects which would be crazy to talk about in a interview if you catch the breeze blowing by you. Ha Ha.

Onpointmag.info: You also just drop a mixtape with Dj frosty “Trapping for Beats” What made you drop two mixtapes back to back in the same month?

Trapstar: Well the first tape we did, “In Tune Wit My Star Player” with DJ Dyce & DJ Cannon Banyon came out in the summer and that’s all we promoted. So we decided to give the streets a warm-up with the “Trapping For Beats” so that dropped 2 weeks before the “Work For Hire” came out. It was strictly a jacking for beats tape, so it held fans over that waited on the “Work For Hire” to drop. It worked so expect a Vol. 2 in the near future.

Onpointmag.info: What made you do 2 different mixtapes?

Trapstar: Seeing how the game has gone almost totally digital, it makes the fan crave new music a lot faster. When they log onto the computer everyday there is new music. So my thought process is as long as I can stay consistent with delivering hot material then I’ll develop my fan base by dropping as many mixtapes as I can.

Onpointmag.info: How did differences between you and lil Ru start and did it everything been resolve?

Trapstar: Honestly there is no issue. The line on the intro goes, “Stupid Dope Moves SDM don’t ask me bout Lil Ru I’m not him.” It was like when I first got down with Stupid Dope Moves every interview was about Lil Ru and Charlamagne’s beef. In the intro that was my way of addressing it and getting over it on the first song. Can’t hate on the fact he was the first one to break out, but I can say I don’t like some of the statements he made in regards to SC and its artists.

Onpointmag.info: So when can we expect to see Trap Star pop up in one of funny azz..comedy videos with Lil Duval & Charlamagne Tha God?

Trapstar: I’ll say I’ll probably never be featured on the State Of The Union series. That’s their forum to clown and do what they do. It’s a funny series but not my style. You’ll see EXTRAGRIND TV pop up soon. A lot of people have been asking me to do more online stuff.

Onpointmag.info: What are your thoughts about the Carolina Movement last year, where do u see it going in 2010?

Trapstar: The Carolina Movement was decent last year. I feel like we could have done more things with each other as artists like other states do. We have to learn to congratulate others on success, so that they may congratulate us when it is our turn. In 2010 I think folks will try to come together, but a lot have to realize this is business.

Onpointmag.info: How would you describe the Greenville/Upstate Hip Hop scene?

Trapstar: The Upstate scene is the untold story. There are a lot of talented rappers up this way like my group, ExtraGrind Boiz, BPT, Ricky Price, Yung Daze (who was signed to ColliPark), JayR-15, AMG, Benz to name a few. Also we have R&B singers such as Rod Durrah, Najah & Vocals. Producers like BeatBangas, Imperial, Beatoven, Josh Butler, Traxx On Dekk & Tee Beatz provide the beats for a majority of the artists up here. Its rising, and as soon as everyone decides to put they business in place we will take off!

Onpointmag.info: What can we expect from Trap Star & SDM in 2010?

Trapstar: In 2010 expect double the production of 2009. I got a mixtape coming with DJ B-Lord, “The Happy Juice Hangover” another “Trapping For Beats” with DJ Kryptonite this time around. The sequel to “In Tune With My Star Player,” and a couple other tapes I have to get locked in first before I say anything. Also I’m working on my album as well along the way. Just expect me to get better and better the whole year. Expect a lot of parties this year as well. Me & my producer Djay Cas have introduced the state to our sound and now we wanna go global. My manager, Jah, has been in Atlanta making some major moves for me as well as my Engineer, Rel. Big shouts to shebloggin.com, writersblockmedia.net, carolinahustle.com, thelyfestyle.com, nancioradioshow, onpointmag.info, trapsntrunks.com, muzikfene.com, karolinasouth.com and all the other sites that have held me down and continue to hold me down. THANK YOU FROM ME!
